Groteske Lieder

Groteske Lieder is a work for solo baritone and piano which evolved in reaction to my observation of the masterclasses and concerts of the Queensland Art Song Festival 2024. The composition is structured around a central ‘lieder’ enshrined by theatrically driven sections which draw inspiration from the different mannerisms of performers of German art song. These perceptions are built from a collection of personal experiences and anecdotes from colleagues. The work was composed specifically for the winner of the Australian Lieder Competition 2025 (Harry Hammett).
