rehearsal
rehearsal
Written for Ensemble Platypus, rehearsal is a work for bass clarinet, viola, cello and double bass. The work was premiered in 2025 as part of the new music festival Sounds of Now Vienna 2025. The composition plays with the space between rehearsal and performance, drawing upon my personal experiences both in and observing rehearsals and the different interactions that occur between musicians.
The choice of instrumentation evolved in dialogue with the ensemble, who desired a work for a subset of their full instrumentation (which would add violin and piano). The composition features the use of specific costumes and stage settings, with the opportunity for a singular audience member to be seated on the floor in the middle of the ensemble itself. This is the optimum position to experience the sonic elements of the work, but not the theatrical as the audience member has to rotate their head in order to flick between different members of the ensemble itself, never experiencing the ‘full view’ that the rest of the conventionally seated audience are experiencing.
Instrumentation: B. Cl., Vla., Vcl., C.b.
